Proposal: How does temperature, gas or water affect the formation of rust on iron

Materials needed: 
  • small iron nails or screws or iron rods(preferable 
  • Test tubes(school)
  • cork(school)
  • De ionised water(school)
  • Sodium hydroxide(school)
  • Hydrochloric acid(school)
  • Beaker(school)
  • Test tube stand(school)
  • Condenser(school)
  • Magnesium strips(school)
  • Vinegar
  • Baking soda
  • aluminium
  • Electronic scale(school)
  • Bunsen Burner(school)
  • Tripod stand for bunsen burner(school)
  • Salt
  • small tongs
  • Teacher

Alteration to water: 
  • Saltwater(add salt)
  • De-Ionised water(at school)
  • normal water(anywhere)
  • pure water(Distillation)
  • Water with hydrochloric acid(5%)*
  • water with sodium hydroxide(5%)*

Alteration to gas:
  • Hydrogen [metal (magnesium) with acid]
  • CO2 (Vinegar and baking soda)
  • Ammonia(Ammonium salt with alkaline solution)
  • Nitrogen(Take some air, burn some carbon-rich material in it until no further burning occurs. Then pass the remaining gas through an alkaline solution to remove the carbon dioxide. The remaining gas will be more than 95% nitrogen)

Alteration to temperature (for 15 mins):
  • 100 degrees
  • 50 degrees
  • 20 degrees?

How to measure rust?

An accurate scale is needed. Simply weigh the iron rod.(electronic scale is provided by the school)

*5%- Sodium Hydroxide/Hydrochloric Acid

95%- Water
